Refugees and Protected Persons

Canada is a party to the 1951 Geneva Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol. This means that Canada provides asylum and protection to those who are persecuted, or would be subjected to torture or to a risk to their life or to a risk of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment in their home country.

Grounds of persecution recognized in the 1951 Convention, and in Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, include race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, and political opinion.

Our lawyers have successfully represented many refugee claimants from across the globe, both before the Refugee Protection Division and the Refugee Appeal Division.

We recognize that refugee claimants and those who seek protection are among the most vulnerable people in the world. As such, we strive to provide these individuals and families with quality legal representation in an expeditious manner. Our lawyers provide assistance in all matters affecting refugees and protected persons, including:

  • Inland refugee claims
  • Resettlements from outside Canada – Convention Refugee Abroad Class & Country of Asylum Class
  • Refugee Sponsorships – Groups of Five, Sponsorship Agreement Holders, and Community Sponsors
  • Pre-Removal Risk Assessments (PRAAs)
  • Hearings before the Refugee Protection Division
  • Appeals before the Refugee Appeal Division
  • Judicial reviews before the Federal Court
